Armadillos to Mastodons

A History of the Texas Hill Country

Benford E. Standley

This is a geological and archeological history of the country side in Texas known to many as the
Texas Hill Country.  We go back to when this area was a warm shallow ocean where giant
sea lizards swam their waters...then there was a volcano and the Balconies Fault...This is a
story about the people who gathered around Barton Springs in Austin, Texas and were so
peaceful that when the Spanish got here they left them alone and called them the Tonkawa,
which was said to mean "most human of people."   Then here came Stephen F. Austin and
Mr. Lamar and the boys, and the Colt 45 and the mandate to leave or be brought to extinction.
