First Annual Native America Grammy Nominee Showcase

February 26, 2002, the First Annual Native American Grammy Nominee Showcase was held in Hollywood, Cal.
at the Kodak Theater Grand Ballroom, the new home of the Academy Awards®. This unprecedented  event was
be held in conjunction with GrammyFest®, a series of events designed to showcase a variety of musical talent.

BLESS THE PEOPLE WINS THE GRAMMY

On Bless The People, Primeaux & Mike offer their latest
harmonized peyote songs which are performed during the 
rituals of the Native American Church. Verdell Primeaux is
of the Lakota people and is the son of famed peyote singer, Frances Primeaux while Johnny Mike is of the Navajo. Both singers were born into the Native American Church and have
won many awards. This Grammy nomination is the first time singers from the Native American Church have been nom-
inated.

The evenings festivities included the awarding of a second Gold record to R. Carlos Nakai for
"Earth Spirit." Billboard Magazine also awarded Higher Octave Records with a special
'Chart Recognition Award' for their top selling Native American New Age Bestseller "Sacred
Spirit II", which has received a Grammy nomination in the New Age Category.
