From LA Weekly, January 2001
Helmed by longtime country-rock singer-songwriter Jack Tempchin, this ongoing,
no-cover weekly
romp is a sort of reversal from the nightclub norm, inasmuch as it provides
an upfront setting for what are
typically behind-the-scenes shenanigans. With a stellar crew of regular
accompanists that includes
Waddy Wachtel, British R&B cult rocker Terry Reid and Rolling Stones
backup singer Bernard Fowler,
high-quality music is assured, but the well-connected Tempchin often enjoys
drop-in visits from big-name
buddies. Hell, he's had songs recorded by everyone from Jonny Rivers to
George Jones to the Eagles to
Patty Loveless, which ought to give a clear picture of the flexibility
and skill Tempchin rightly lays claim
to. The aforementioned Rivers has made the scene, as have George Thorogood,
Joe Walsh and plenty of
others (often arena-level stars, but celebrity sensitivity demands discretion
in print). Make a long story
short, if these cats are willing to work on New Year's Day, they must have
one worthwhile mutha of an
ace in the hole.
